PHD OR POST-DOCTORAL POSITION IN IMAGE ANALYSIS FOR 3D ELECTRON MICROSCOPY

A PhD (4 years) or postdoctoral (2-3 years) position is available for an
individual who is interested to develop or apply innovative approaches for
imaging cellular organelles with three-dimensional (3D) electron microscopy
(EM) techniques.

The applicant will be stationed in the 3DEM group of Bram Koster (3D
electron microscopy, automation) on a joint project with Judith Klumperman
(vesicular transport, immuno-electron microscopy) entitled ‘Electron
tomography and 3D analysis of intracellular compartments: the early
biosynthetic pathway’. The project is supported by the Dutch foundation for
Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM).

The individual does not necessarily need to be familiar with the specifics
of electron tomography or with the biological aspects of the project, but
has to have a keen interest to develop (or improve currently available) 3D
image processing and visualization methods. A physical background is desired
but not obligatory.

Within the 3DEM group first-rate imaging facilities are available.
Presently, computational facilities include a cluster of Windows NT/2000,
Linux and two Unix workstations. Preparation of biological specimens for
3DEM analysis occurs by the Klumperman group. Both the Koster and Klumperman
groups are situated at the Utrecht university. They participate in an
interdisciplinary national-wide program (http://mcb.bio.uu.nl/IB/) and have
readily access to instrumentation and expertise in X-ray crystallography,
NMR and protein engineering. In addition, close collaboration exists with
groups dedicated to developing image processing techniques (Prof. Max
Viergever, http://www.imago.uu.nl/), also at the Utrecht university campus.

The city of Utrecht is situated in the heart of the Netherlands and close to
many locations in Europe. By train, it will take you 35 min to Amsterdam and
less than 4 hrs to Paris. By plane, it will be less than 3 hrs to Italy or
Spain.

For more information, see Cell 1999(98)81 and J Struct Biol 1997(120)276.
