Electron Microscope Scientist

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute, a leading biomedical research
organization, is seeking a motivated and personable scientist to take
charge of the operation of a new, 300 KV FEG electron microscope
equipped with a liquid helium stage. This position will be in the lab of
Dr. Eva Nogales at UC Berkeley, Department of Molecular and Cell
Biology, with a start date of October 2000 or until position is filled.

Principal Responsibilities:
- Daily house-keeping and maintenance of instrument
- Responsibility for recognizing problems and contacting service personnel
- After being trained for optimal use of the scope, the individual will
be in charge of training users in the collection of high-resolution images
- Individual will be highly encouraged to establish research
collaborations with the research teams using the scope

Preferred Qualifications:
- BS/BA degree and 2+ years experience preferred
- Strong organizational skills; able to handle multiple responsibilities
- Good manual dexterity
- Preference will be given to individuals with demonstrated experience
with one or more of the following:
- High-resolution electron microscopy
- Cryo-electron microscopy techniques
- Practical skills in equipment maintenance
